Summary
ARA-290 is a synthetic 11-amino acid peptide derived from the helix-B surface peptide of erythropoietin (EPO). Unlike EPO itself, it is non-hematopoietic but retains the tissue-protective properties of EPO by selectively activating the innate repair receptor (IRR). Studied for neuropathic pain and tissue repair.
EPO is famous as a blood-doping drug, but it also has powerful tissue-repair properties through a completely separate receptor. ARA-290 is a piece of EPO's structure that only activates the repair receptor — none of the blood-boosting. It's primarily studied for nerve pain, particularly the small-fiber nerve damage seen in sarcoidosis patients, where it showed meaningful pain reduction in a clinical trial.
Mechanism of Action↓
Activates the IRR (β-common receptor / β2-adrenergic receptor heterodimer), triggering anti-inflammatory and tissue-repair signaling without activating the classical EPO receptor homodimer (which drives erythropoiesis). Reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines, promotes nerve fiber repair.
Half-life: ~2–4 hours
Research Dosing Ranges↓
4 mg per day
Once daily subcutaneous injection
Phase 2 trial for sarcoidosis neuropathy: 4 mg/day SC × 28 days.
Reconstitution Guidance↓
BAC water: 1 mL
Resulting concentration: 4 mg/mL
Add 1 mL BAC water to 4 mg vial.
Storage & Stability↓
Refrigerate. Use reconstituted within 28 days.
Known Side Effects / Contraindications↓
Well tolerated. Mild injection site reactions.

Concentration: 10 mg ÷ 3 mL = 3.33 mg/mL (3333 µg/mL)
Dose needed: 250 µg = 0.2500 mg
Volume per dose: 0.2500 mg ÷ 3.33 mg/mL = 0.0750 mL
On U-100 syringe: 75.0 µL = 7.5 units
Total doses in vial: 10 mg ÷ 0.2500 mg = 40.0 doses
